Our organization is based on our recognition of the unique and delicately balanced eco-system of the Horicon Marsh and the surrounding area. One of our many organizational goals is to build a network of concerned citizens that protects the Horicon Marsh and surrounding areas against unwanted environmental, social and human impacts. HMS Advocates welcomes all citizens to express their environmental, social, and economical concerns involving the Horicon Marsh and surrounding areas. Currently, our organization is focusing on Forward Energy’s wind farm project consisting of an estimated 150 wind turbines which are planned to be located in an area close to the Horicon Marsh. Our organization feels that this project will have a devastating environmental impact on the surrounding area of the Marsh which we all now enjoy. The Horicon Marsh is the largest fresh water cattail Marsh in the U.S. and possibly the world. The marsh offers a home to many year round and migratory wildlife. Tens of thousands of geese and other migratory birds use the marsh area for a stop over during their migratory flight. Locating a wind farm project in this area would have a devastating impact on the migratory flight pattern of the birds. Altamont Pass, in California, is a prime example of a wind farm project gone sour. According to environmental studies, this project is responsible for the deaths of 20,000 to 30,000 birds, in which an estimated 600-800 are the protected golden eagle. Many of the bird kills are raptor species such as red tail hawks, owls, and etc. This is just one of many concerns and issues that our organization has regarding this project. This reaffirms our commitment that a good ideal is not placed in a bad location. Our organization does not oppose wind power, however, it must be placed in an appropriate location. We are aggressively pursing this project and any other projects that should arise with the potential to have environmental or human impacts on the Horicon Marsh and surrounding areas. | |||||||||
